Trainers' Training on Supply Chain Management & Marketing of Horticultural Crops
Introduction
Three days trainer’s training on ‘Supply chain management & marketing of horticultural crops’ was organized by Central Institute of Horticulture, DAC, Ministry of Agriculture, GOI, Medziphema, Nagaland
in collaboration with Directorate of Horticulture, Meghalaya with CSS NIAM, Jaipur as the technical knowledge partner at the conference hall of Directorate of Agriculture, Shillong, Meghalaya from 17th -19th June 2015, for the state Govt. officials of horticulture dept. Govt. of Meghalaya. The objective of the training was to give individual attention to the trainees for imparting theoretical and practical knowledge on the subject who in turn will be the master trainers for the farmers of the state.
Inaugural function
The inaugural programme was chaired by Mr. M Syiem, Director, Directorate of Horticulture, where welcome address was also delivered by him. Addressing the inaugural programme on 17th June 2015 as the chief guest, Smt. M N Manpui, Jt. Secy (Agri) Govt. of Meghalaya stated that the training is being conducted at the very right time in context of Meghalaya where development of horticulture is very fast and that the state’s economy depends on agriculture of which horticulture plays a major role and Meghalaya was indeed a treasure grove of horticulture crops where development in supply chain and marketing was need of the hour. She also exhorted the participants to take full advantage of the training programme so as to disseminate the knowledge and technologies learnt so that ultimate benefit goes to the farmers of the state.
Dr. Lallan Ram, Director, CIH who was also the guest of honor deliberated that the supply chain starts even before the crop is harvested till it reaches the consumer and motivated the participants to work as an ambassador for transfer of technology at the farmer’s field . Brief remark about the subject was delivered by Dr.Ramesh Mittal, Dy. Director, NIAM and vote of thanks was pronounced by Smt. Sentiyangla Pongener, HS & Training i/c CIH.
Technical session (17.6.15)
On the first day Resource person Dr.Ramesh Mittal and Mr.Pabin Das, imparted on the topics like Basics of Supply Chain Management, Success story in Marketing and E-Marketing along with practical on case studies. Experience sharing by the participants on marketing was also done.

On the second day resource persons Mr.Pabin Das and Shri. M Iboyaima Meitei, Advisor Horticulture, North East Council, Govt. of India, Shillong: Meghalaya imparted on the topics such as ‘Marketing Opportunities, Retail Supply Chains and Policy developments for horti-business promotion in NE Region ’. As a part of the training field visit to Meghalaya State Agriculture Marketing Board (MSAMB) was also done where the participants were deliberated on the various activities of the board by the secretary, MSAMB. They were informed that the board has 71 gowdons in its premises spread over 16 ha and was working as a monitoring agent between the traders and farmers. The main commodities that are stored were broom, Tej pata and potato. Participants were allowed to visit the gowdons were commodities were stored and also interacted with the traders. They were also given a firsthand experience on the handling and sorting of the products.

On the third day resource person Dr.Ramesh Mittal gave lecture on the topics like Agri-Marketing (Reforms) & Research on SCM & Agri Business, Agri. Food Supply Chain and Buying & Selling Dynamics in horticulture along with case studies.
Valedictory function
During the valedictory function short speech was delivered by Dr. Ramesh Mittal, Dy. Director, NIAM, Jaipur, where he encouraged CIH to organize such training on the topic that is so relevant and very useful for the extension functionaries of the state department and expressed hope that the information gathered and knowledge gained during the training will go a long way in helping the farmers of the state.
Feedback from on behalf of the participants was delivered by Dr. Joseph Muklin, ADO, Nongstin, Meghalaya who expressed his gratitude to the institute and NIAM, Jaipur for conducting such intensive and practical oriented training programme and requested CIH to conduct similar training programme in the near future. Certificates along with reading materials were distributed to all the participants. Altogether 42 participants attended the training programme. Vote of thanks was delivered by Mr.Prabin Das, Marketing specialist, CIH. The training was coordinated by Smt. Sentiyangla Pongener, HS & Training i/c CIH.
